United to
Tokyo Haneda:
Expect More

United's proposal for six additional daily nonstop flights from U.S. hubs to Tokyo Haneda Airport

Better choices
for U.S. consumers

United Airlines' proposed routes for Tokyo Haneda service from six hubs — Newark/New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Houston and Guam — would offer more options and convenience for consumers from U.S. cities where the demand is highest.

Experience
matters

With the world's most comprehensive route network, United will leverage its unparalleled commitment to Tokyo and its experience in the region to expand best-in-class service to Japan.

Faster, higher,
stronger

As a proud sponsor of the U.S. Olympic Committee for nearly four decades, United's bid reflects our commitment to cross-cultural connection and to strengthening business ties on a global scale ahead of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

United has applied for new Haneda slot pairs as part of the Department of Transportation's (DOT) competitive route proceeding. An award of slots to United depends on the U.S. and Japan formalizing an aviation agreement later this year and DOT approving some or all of United's proposal.

Expect more from the future of U.S.-Japan air travel

United's proposed routes to Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) would support American businesses and help grow the U.S. economy by connecting major U.S. markets to the closest airport to central Tokyo, the largest city in the world and a 21st century hub of global commerce and innovation. Routes from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD), Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and Guam's A.B. Won Pat International Airport (GUM) would offer seamless access to Tokyo Haneda via nonstop flights from these key U.S. business, government and cultural centers. Together, the flights from U.S. mainland hub cities and Guam will connect Tokyo Haneda with 112 U.S. airports representing approximately two thirds of U.S.-Tokyo demand, or more than three million annual bookings to Tokyo. These hub cities represent a population of nearly 56 million Americans.

Meeting demand for U.S. consumers

With these new flights in place, United would provide new Tokyo Haneda service from:

  • The largest market for travel demand between the U.S. mainland and Tokyo (Los Angeles);
  • The two largest markets for travel demand between the East Coast and Tokyo (Newark/New York City and Washington, D.C,); and
  • The two largest markets for travel demand between the central U.S. and Tokyo (Chicago and Houston).

Additionally, demand in the Guam-Tokyo market is significant – this route provides service to a Japanese tourist base that is critical to Guam's tourism industry, economy and job market.

Expanding best-in-class Japan service

United's proposal would help realize the full potential of these new routes for U.S. consumers and businesses by expanding United's broad-based and end-to-end network between the U.S. mainland and Japan, including:

  • Six flights to Tokyo Haneda, the closest airport to downtown Tokyo and a gateway for connection points throughout Japan.
  • Four flights from the East Coast, central U.S. and West Coast to Tokyo Narita International Airport, an important gateway for connections throughout the Asia/Pacific region.

United's joint venture with All Nippon Airways (ANA) provides even more convenient options for travel between United's U.S. hubs and Japan at Haneda compared to Narita.

  • United's flights to Haneda would allow U.S. consumers to make connections to 37 points in Japan served by ANA at Haneda.
  • By linking ANA's domestic Japan network with 112 U.S. airports where United would offer nonstop or single-connection service, these new flights would strengthen and streamline a comprehensive network across the U.S. with points across Japan.
  • United's proposal would also increase convenience, reduce travel time and simplify connections for U.S. servicemembers and their families, particularly those traveling to and from Okinawa via Tokyo. United's partner ANA offers multiple flights between Haneda and Okinawa versus one between Narita and Okinawa.

Easier travel to other destinations in Japan and Asia

United has long been a pioneer in opening markets to better serve consumers throughout the world, including the Asia/Pacific region. United serves 31 markets in the region, and since 2014, has successfully launched 11 new nonstop flights from the U.S. mainland to destinations throughout the Asia/Pacific. Our Tokyo Haneda proposal will make it easier to travel to other destinations across Japan.

Fleets and Seats

The proposed flights will use aircraft from United's existing fleet, ranging from United's brand new Boeing 787-10 aircraft and its Boeing 777-200 aircraft for flights from the U.S. mainland to Tokyo Haneda, to its 777-200 with 364 seats for flights from Guam to Tokyo Haneda. United Polaris® business class service, designed to bring a new level of quality to every aspect of premium cabin travel, will be available on the proposed U.S. mainland—Haneda flights, as will United® Premium Plus.

Timing

The proposal is part of a competitive route proceeding launched by the Department of Transportation (DOT) in expectation of signing a new aviation accord with Japan later this year. Following the DOT's final decision in this route proceeding, we will work diligently to introduce these new offerings to consumers as quickly as possible. We expect to begin service on March 31, 2020 before the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

A spirit and vision for travel, business and innovation

As a proud sponsor of the U.S. Olympic Committee for nearly four decades, United has always been driven by the ethos of "faster, higher, stronger."" That same spirit drives many of the innovative U.S. businesses poised to benefit from United's expanded service. The consumer benefits of United's requested routes – from five of the six largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. mainland and Guam to an international business destination like Tokyo – will help American companies compete and grow in the global economy.

Japan is one of the world's largest economies, an essential U.S. business partner and the second largest foreign direct investment contributor to the United States. American companies doing business in Japan need best-in-class travel options to compete and grow. The myriad consumer benefits of United's requested route frequencies – more seats, more time-of-day options, more convenient connections from small and mid-sized U.S. cities nationwide and more access to United's industry-leading route network at Tokyo Haneda and Narita – will help American consumers and companies doing business in Japan.

Benefits for business travelers

  • Compared to Narita, access to Haneda's convenient location near Tokyo's city center is particularly crucial for the American businessperson traveling to Japan for a key meeting or to close a deal.
  • The connections through Haneda to other key business centers throughout Japan will increase efficiency and improve convenience for U.S. business travelers.
  • When business travelers return home from Tokyo, they want and deserve travel options from Haneda that allow them to fly back to the U.S. on the U.S. airline of their choice.
